Winter Update

This will report on races run this winter by two alumni and one current student.

Shawn McKinstry is currently a junior at Hillsdale College. He has run in three meets so far this winter, and is leading up to a big 800 in Boston on February 9.

Shawn's first meet was the Eastern Michigan U Opener. He ran the 800 in 1:58.9 and split a 400 in 51.9. He next ran at Notre Dame, running his first mile since high school. He ran a PR of 4:26.64 for the mile, and ran a 50.7 split in a 400. Last weekend, he was at the Findlay University Oiler Open, where he ran two relays. He split 1:55.2 in the 800 and 52.0 in the 400.

Andrew Hanko is a plebe (freshman) at the United States Naval Academy. He has run two meets this winter, winning both times. In a quad meet at the Academy on January 19, Andrew won the 3000 meter race in a PR of 8:26.06. Thus past Saturday, he ran at the Penn State National Meet in State College, PA, and won the college mile in a PR of 4:09.99. For this latter performance, he was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week. The official Patriot League release follows:

M-F Athletic Male Rookie of the Week: Andrew Hanko, Navy Fr., Montville, N.J.
Hanko earned his first career weekly award with a victory in the mile race at the Penn State National Open last weekend. The newcomer ran the race in a time of 4:09.99, which was an IC4A-qualifying mark. This was the first time that he had run this distance at the collegiate level.

Jared Hanko is currently a junior at Trinity, and has run a few races this winter as well. On December 27, 2007 he ran 4:48 for a 1600 in Jersey City, NJ at the Holiday Relays Carnival. His next race was a 3200 at the Ridgewood Winter Games II on January 15. His time was 10:19. His most recent race was a PR of 4:42.07 for the 1600, run on Janaury 18, 2007 at the Jersey City Developmental Meet.

Running Shoe Information

This is basic information concerning what you should be looking for in running shoes. You will need a good pair of running shoes. Running shoes are made to cushion and support the foot in ways regular sneakers are not. It should be noted that good running shoes should not be used for other sports. They are not made to support the foot for sports, such as basketball, which require lateral motion. I have a personal preference for Brooks running shoes, although many companies make good models.

Read this paragraph carefully! Most of the major shoe companies make good quality running shoes. You have to realize that running shoes are made for this sport only, and cross trainers and other sneakers are not appropriate for running. The major characteristics of running shoes are cushioning, stability, motion control and flexibility. When you look at shoes, make sure they flex easily in the forefoot area, and not in the middle of the shoe. If they do not flex in the forefoot, and rather flex in the middle, you will end up with calf and Achilles tendon injuries. Make sure they have that company's cushioning system (Brooks Hydroflow, Nike Air, Asics Gel, etc.) The cheaper shoes made by each company do not contain the cushioning elements. With regard to stability, if you hold the front of the right shoe steady with your left hand and twist the shoe at the heel towards the arch area or inside of the shoe, it should not flex in that direction too easily or there is not enough support.

The best way to ensure that you get an appropriate shoe and an appropriate fit is to purchase your shoes at a reputable running store (not some place like Sports Authority which charges top dollar and the people have little knowledge about running).

We are recommending one particular store this year: Runners Pace located at 422 Rt. 202/206N, Bedminster, NJ 07921. Phone number 908-781-6842. It is about 25 minutes away down Route 287 in The Hills Shopping Center. Very knowledgeable, great service, and people who support high school track & field. The owner of the store, Ryan Grote, is the distance coach at Gill St. Bernards School. Make sure you tell him you run for Trinity. For extra credit ask him about his new son Frederick!

Practice Information: Days and Times

Scheduled practices are Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, roughly 3:15 or 3:30 to 4:45 to 5:00, and Saturday mornings (see below). PLEASE DO NOT ASK TO PICK UP YOUR STUDENT UNTIL PRACTICE IS OVER. With only three days of practice per week, we need every minute of these practices.

We will have organized sessions after school two days per week, on Tuesday and Thursday. If others can help on those days, please let me know (as soon as possible!). We will usually have some students at TCS and some at Montville HS during these practices. Students are expected to attend all practices unless excused by the coaching staff. If there are regular scheduling problems (e.g., a job) let us know and we will work something out. More on the coaching staff below.

Saturday practices will again be at 8:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday mornings at Montville High School for both teams . PLEASE DROP THEM OFF SO THEY CAN BEGIN WARMING UP PROMPTLY AT THE TIMES NOTED. PRACTICES WILL GENERALLY END AT 10:00 ON COLD OR RAINY DAYS and in the beginning of the season, and by 10:30 on other days. Please be prompt in picking up your students at those times. Note this policy: If a student is not picked up at the time the workout ends, he/she will be taken to TCS and dropped off to wait indoors in the school lobby to be picked up. This ensures that the athletes will not be out in the cold for too long, and also allows those of the coaching staff to lead a (more) normal life! Thus, if you come to pick up your athlete and he/she is not there, proceed to TCS.
